A 20-minute drive will take you to the town of Ballachulish, where you can explore the local slate quarry. The quarry itself was active from 1693 - 1955. The trail starts from the Tourist Information Centre in the centre of the town, where there are also spaces for parking. Start the walk by heading past the tourist information centre and public toilets, cross the road and head through the gate. Be sure to look out for information boards scattered around about the old quarry. You will then see a path signposted as 'Brecklet Path'.
The Brecklet trail is one of our favourite spots for taking in Ballachulish's history. You can take the two-mile trail over a well-defined path or a shorter circuit inside the base of the quarry.
While you're there, make sure to visit the last remaining inclined 'slate arch' in Scotland which is still cherished by local people. You will be able to spot this on your way to and from the quarry if you are driving on the main road.
